A career in advertising and promotions is often as lucrative as you make it. As you advance through the ranks, you can eventually be promoted to the position of manager. As of 2011, the median salary for an advertising manager is between $63,000 and $107,000 per year according to the State University website. While a number of people possess the qualifications to work in advertising or promotions, it is the select few who also possess managerial skills.
Education
A person must have a minimum of a bachelor's degree to even get into advertising. A communications or marketing degree will put you on the best path. Business administration is another major that will prove useful. While an enterprising ad executive can work his way up to a managerial position, he will stand a better chance completing his master's degree or an equivalent certification program.
Experience
It is impossible to get hired as an advertising or marketing manager with no prior experience in advertising. As the position is highly competitive, you must have the right qualifications. You will need a minimum of two to five years of experience, although you may likely need even more than that. You do not necessarily have to work at an advertising or marketing agency to start. You can work your way up through the advertising department of a large company as an alternative.

Working in advertising requires a specific skill set. You must be creative while being able to multi-task and meet deadlines. You must be comfortable speaking in front of crowds. You should be highly organized, as you will be expected to put together complex campaigns and presentations without the luxury of excess time. You must be able to work well with others. To become an advertising or marketing manager, you will need strong leadership and decision-making skills. You must be able to motivate your team to perform at a high level, or it will be your job on the line. Finally, an advertising manager almost certainly will work beyond a 40-hour workweek. You must possess the dedication and drive to stay at the office when everyone else has gone home.
