Marketing analysts, also known as market research specialists or market researchers, project potential sales of products and help businesses plan marketing strategies. They do this by surveying the likes and dislikes of potential customers, analyzing data on market conditions and gathering information on competitors. Companies may employ their own marketing analysts, but many analysts work for consulting and marketing firms. Salaries for market research analysts average more than $65,000 a year as of 2009, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Salary Range
Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) for 2009 indicated that marketing analyst salaries ranged from a low of $34,260 a year for the lowest-paid 10 percent to a high of more than $110,000 a year for the top 10 percent. The median salary for market researchers was $61,580 in 2009, the bureau reported.
Salaries by Industry
The BLS reported in 2009 that the industries with the highest employment of marketing analysts include management and scientific consulting firms, management of companies and enterprises, professional and technical service companies, computer design and related firms, and insurance carriers. Average salaries for market research analysts in these settings ranged from $64,000 a year in consulting and professional service firms to more than $81,000 a year in computer systems design and related service companies.
Significance
Computer and software firms offered the highest salaries for marketing analysts, according to BLS information for 2009. Salary figures indicate that marketing analysts in computer manufacturing companies earned an average of more than $100,000 a year, while analysts employed by software publishers had annual salaries averaging almost $98,000 a year. Other high-paying employers of marketing analysts included the aerospace and semiconductor manufacturing industries, where market research salaries averaged $88,730 and $89,610 a year, respectively.

The BLS projects faster-than-average growth in job opportunities for market research analysts, but cautions that the best opportunities and the highest salaries will exist for men and women with master's or doctoral degrees, as well as strong quantitative skills that enable them to analyze extensive amounts of data. Bachelor's degree holders may face limited opportunities unless they possess strong computer and quantitative skills.
