Using a mailing list, rather than individually sending messages to each recipient, saves time and protects the identity of the people on the mailing list. Mailing lists may focus on a particular subject where people with shared interests can exchange ideas and news. Businesses may use mailing lists to notify customers of an upcoming product release. Some people use mailing lists to share life updates with friends and family. You can easily create and maintain a mailing list with free software.

Choose a free mailing list provider. There are a number of free mailing list providers on line, including Yahoo! Groups, Google Groups, Aardvark Mail and Notify List. Features and options vary between mailing list providers, but most will include administrative options, mailing list types and moderation options.

Create an account with a unique name for your mailing list. Choose a mailing list name that will make it easy for subscribers to identify its purpose.

Configure your mailing list type. Popular mailing list options include choosing an announcement or a discussion format. In an announcement mailing list, only mail from approved senders, such as the administrator, are sent to the subscribers. In a discussion format mailing list, mail can be sent from all subscribers.

Configure your moderation type. In an unmoderated mailing list, messages that are sent to the mailing list are automatically sent to other list subscribers. In a moderated mailing list, messages are only sent to the mailing list after they have been checked by an administrator.

Configure your other options. Other options can include allowing subscribers to reply to the group or reply to the sender of a message and archiving rules.

Create a welcome message. Welcome messages are the first official message subscribers receive after joining a mailing list. Include a friendly greeting, thanking your subscriber for accepting the invitation to your mailing list. The welcome message should also include the general purpose of the mailing list and any rules that you would like to remind subscribers to follow, such as being courteous to others.

Invite your first users. Inform your initial mailing list recipients that you would like to add them to your mailing list and send them an invitation that includes instructions on how to subscribe.
